Thank you THOM! (A/K/A The Dangers of “The Secret”)`1
Jul 21st, 2008 by BohemianMoon
Who is Thom and why am I thanking him?
First and foremost, Thom Rutledge is a HOOT! He is also one hell of an intelligent psychotherapist and author (I don’t mean your profession to come secondary to your sense of humor Thom…..don’t get me wrong now!)
A couple of weeks ago on David’s radio show “Psychic Wisdom with David James”, Thom and David had an open and frank discussion regarding the dangers of the DVD and book of the same title, “The Secret” (the download of the broadcast can be found at www.ask1radio.com under David James).
I have admired Thom for over a year now, not only for his humor ( that is a given) and psychotherapy work proper, but his willingness to speak openly and frank on matters he feels strongly about. His commentary on the emotional dangers regarding the “tenents” of “The Secret” was no exception.
While the hysterical hoopla that surrounds “The Secret” has finally died down (thankfully), this was not the case a mere year ago when the masses (by their own volition and the egging on from herds of sheeples ) were getting hookwinked into believing this hype.
I am obviously as into metapsychical and paranormal theories as the next bloke, lord knows I have been studying it long enough. I am, however, a bit more analytical in my studies than the next and not so airy fairy as the one after. When “The Secret” hype was spreading like a dangerous wildfire, I had to, of course, watch the DVD and further, read the book. I was fortunate enough not to have had to lay down a cent for the DVD as I apparently attracted a free “screening” via the web. Obviously my attraction signals got crossed in regards to the book, because I ended up shelling out about $10.00 for it at Costco.
(A sacred $10.00 that I could have spent on two large bags of Hot Tamale candies……..trust me, they would have attracted to me more happiness than the book ever could……..live and learn, live and learn).
The DVD was simply annoying and my husband and I got through about a quarter of it before we gave up our free web “screening” (computer says no) in favor of an previously downloaded episode of “Little Britain”. Time better spent, I assure you.
It was a couple of weeks later that I traded my Hot Tamale money in for a copy of the book. I took it home and read it that night in about a 1.5 hour sitting. Flabberghasted at some of the outrageous and IMO, downright dangerous claims the book made, I took to the internet to see what the masses were saying.
OH GOOD LORD was this frightening!
And one of the most all out – hands down- frightening places was the formal “The Secret Forum” itself (which is now defunct…SCORE!) and its evil off shoot, the forums of the “Powerful Intentions” community (started by a host of Rhonda-ites). Which, unfortunately is not defunct……..yet.
It was here that I read, with appall, post after post from Secret newbies being blamed for the the incest, molestation and oftentimes rape that occured at the hands of their uncles, brothers, fathers, next door neighbors and strangers. After all, the sheeple emphasized, it YOUR thoughts that created your reality. It didn’t matter that many of these posters (overwhelmingly female) were relating incidents that happened in their childhoods, mostly at the hands of the very people that were supposed to be their protectors.
WTF?
Me, never being the one to hold back or mince words, immediately asked why were persons perpetuating the blame of someone who was clearly the victim? How in the world can a child of 4, 10 or 13 ask for the blatantantly dangerous situations their elders put them in? How can a child, who is defenseless, impressionable and cognitively immature, make the decision to be emotionally and physically abused? Why would they choose to put themselves in situations in which may take them a lifetime and countless years of therapy to get past to live a semblance of a normal life?
Answer after answer to my post from those in “The Secret” and Law of Attraction ‘know’ firmly stated in no uncertain terms, that a person’s thoughts create their reality- what you think about and concentrate on is what you will see appear in your reality. Whether that is positive or negative. PERIOD. So in fact, they went on, of course those that were the victims of sexual and emotional abuse feared it and those fears created more of the same to them. Either way you dice it, it was stated, a person is the ONLY one that is responsible for what occurs at any point in their own lives, whether they are a newborn or 112.
But don’t worry about the past, they emphasized, now that you know better (no, I shit you not, a number of posters stated that very thing “Now that you know better”), you can created the life of your DREAMS, complete with a fancy house, dream cars, unlimited checks that mysteriously appear in your mail on a daily basis, lottery winnings and success beyond your wildest dreams. Ask, Believe and Receive. Keep the negativity out and the Genie is there at YOUR command for any and all whims.
WTF X 100?
How about simple humanity, kindness and compassion. Is that available in the Genie’s bottle of tricks?
My subsequent posts, regarding this ‘blame the victim’ mentality, how it was dead wrong and further damaging to already fragile indiviuals, attracted to me my first banning from the forums (admittedly, they contained a minor, yet well chosen expletives, but still!).
In the two months that followed, I was banned from the forums under 4 other screen names. All for questioning the tenets of Ask, Believe and Receive. Yep, apparently those that perished in all tsunamis, eathquakes, hurricanes, tonados, terrorist attacks, wars, complete annihilation of ethnic groups, rape, pillage, molestation and every other mental and physical catastrophe to befall an individual or an entire nation was caused individually or collectively by a person’s thinking.
Drink a couple of cups of Kool Aid Baby, and the Holocaust never happened.
Or did because, you know, they attracted it to themselves.
WTF X 1000?
Through those last couple of months, I also watched persons max out their credit cards, and go into sever debt, buying materials items that they could not possibly afford because they had asked, they are believing so therefore WIll receive. Subprime market and predetory lenders aside, I witnessed persons enter into mortgage contracts they could not afford, so they could have the house of their dreams. I saw people spend their mortgage monies, rent and children’s grocery money willy nilly, because with the principles of “The Secret” more would ALWAYS be on the way. I watched women humiliate themselves, attempting to attract back an ex-husband/partner, some of which who had restraining orders against these women, because they were their Soulmate ( good Lord, don’t get me started on THAT concept). All of these posters were cheered on by the whole of the community and when it became clear that the Genie in the Bottle had gone on vacation without notifying the universe and the posters related that nothing had appeared (they didn’t win the lottery that weekend, they had not paid their rent in two months and were being evicted, the repo man was after that BMW for non-payment and at least one of the women posters was arrested for breaking a restraining order), what did the Sheeples say?
They were not trying hard enough or they were doing it wrong. They clearly were not truly BELIEVING, and still allowing those pesky negative thought to rule their psyche. Once again, blaming the victim. Do I believe that the person themselves holds no responsibility? No, of course not. But I am not so blind as to ignore the fact that that Rhonda Byrne and her “teachers” that worked so hard to perpetuate this nonsense would continuously come out as lily white in this, while people’s lives systematically crashed.
Responsibility is due all around.
One of the most interesting aspects of these forums was that none, not ONE of the “teachers” of “The Secret” posted nor guided any of the activity on the forums, even though “The Secret Forum” at the time was touted as the Official forum for the DVD and the book.
No! All of these teachers were mysteriously absent as they were all busy cashing in on internet classes, MLM marketing and securing any speaking engagement that they could. Gotta strike while the iron is hot, ya know.
As they laughed all the way to the bank.
It all sounds unbelievable, but I assure you, it is all true. Through my tenure at these forums, I researched everything I could on the dangers of “The Secret”, and came across Author, Psychotherapist and Radio Host, Thom Rutledge’s site and his humerous, yet strongly poignant, essay on the dangers of “The Secret” clevely titled “The Antidote”.
While I do believe in many “new age” principles/theories ( including a decidely more in depth and complicated theory on the Law of Attraction), positive thinking, and even folk magic (it is all transformation of energy, after all, and energy is kind my thang), there is major dangers in blindly following simplistic principles of thought, particularly those that make the outrageous claims such as “The Secret”.
I urge all of my readers to visit Thoms site and read not only “The Antidote”, but also available at no cost is the first chapter of his enlightening book “Embracing Fear”. Interestingly enough, that of what we fear can be one of our strongest allies in self empowerment, and Thom’s knowledge on same is worth at LEAST a dozen large bags of Hot Tamales!
In an amusing and “ironic” turn of events over the last year since “The Secret” debut, it is amazing the amount of lawsuits that have been filed against Rhonda and between the several of the “teachers” featured in the DVD and book. I can’t help but wonder what there reasoning is for attracting such angst? Anyone? Perhaps they should order Thom’s book, “Embracing Fear” because they are ALL either in the midst of, or heading for, some very scary times!
As my husband related to Thom the other night, the only true use of “The Secret” book was that of when one finds themselves in the bog without a roll of toilet paper. I will go one further and state, I would rather use the husks of the corn we just shucked.
Home grown corn holds more magic than “The Secret” every will.

First, I absolutely loved my interview with David on his radio show. Second, thank you for referring to me as a “hoot” before mentioning that I am a psychotherapist; this indicates true insight into my very soul. Third, let’s all pause and appreciate the word “hoot.” The word itself is a hoot. Fourth, those hot tamale candies are delicious and the fact that you would trade a dozen large bags for my book means a lot. Fifth — I forgot what the fifth is — no wait, I got it: What do I call you? Bohemian? Bo? Ms. Moon? Sixth, I sincerely thank you for your enthusiastic endorsement of my work, and I am very happy to be aware of your work. Seventh, there always needs to be seventh in this kind of list; just having six will simply not do. Eighth — who am I kidding? There is no eighth.
By the way, my email address is thomrutledge@earthlink.net, and I would love to hear from anyone interested in the work I am doing. All help spreading the word is always appreciated, especially since the genie, that is the universe, is apparently not speaking to me.
I’m on my way to Thom’s site. I knew that book gave me the heebie jeebies for a reason. Thanks for your valient fight on those message boards.
Hey there Electra:)
Thanks so much for your comments as they are appreciated:)
I am tickled pink (or red hot tamale, lol) that you are goin g to check out Thom’s site.
He is a HOOT! (I am sure he rather me call him a hoot, than GAS, lol).
Majorly intelligent, compassionate and witty fellow…….oh and you may want to check out his book “Embracing Fear”. I feel that it is a must for anyone that may be holding back from that Moving Forward>>>>>>>>>>>>>> because of fear, whether that be relationship issues, career, creative endeavors…… you get the point;)
In my opinion, you are both a hoot and a gas! Although I prefer Scotch Mints to Hot Tomales, my sentiments exactly! I have a friend, well, an acquaintance, really. In her quest for untold wealth, happiness and success, she has shelled out thousands attending seminars all over the US (a country in which we do not reside) and is now (Lord help me) a “Certified Facilitator of the Secret” or some other BS title. The fine print on the website says that she is only at level 1 or something, and must hold a predetermined number of seminars that bring in a set amount of money and people. After jumping through this hoop, and assuming she meets the “budget”, she moves up (to what, I might add?). What crap. And if you could see the mess her life is in, you would crap. Someone else I know has quit her friggin’ job in order to devote herself to the pursuit of this facilitation thingy! (I know I am being a bit technical with my language, so beg pardon if you are having difficulty keeping up with me
.
Off I go to read Thom’s wisdom and hottiness. Oops. I really did mean to type “hootiness”. I’ll let you know what I think of “Embracing Fear”. I asked the Universe to send me a copy, but it hasn’t arrived yet, so I’m figuring I’ll have to get off my a** (which said Universe has also not made any more shapely, and believe me, I have envisioned and wanted it) and head to Chapters.
(Many thanks for a great blog. Would like to check out more topics. I have a thingy around here (more tech talk) that speaks my name so clearly that I actually answer automatically, even though I know I am the only one home. I have a hunch/feeling that I know who it is, and I would like to get to know her. She is obviously trying to get to know me.)
#4~ I See Stupid People~ (Love, love, love that name!)
And regarding the Secret, there are a lot of them.
At the risk of coming across as a total bitch, however, lol, I do understand how people can get caught up in it.
People want hope, but even moreso than hope, they want an easy fix to what “ails” them. In the “Powerful Intentions” forum heyday, people were hawking easy fixes galore. This was about 3 months into the Secret DVD wildfire, then the book came out. It was a virtual free and open market place for an easy fix……. 1001 magic elixirs to make one’s life instantly complete. Problem there is NOTHING was free. There was one chick there that was selling her mini e- books (really just short essays) called “The Magic Pill”, for like $20 a pop.
As always, curiosity got the best of me and I had to see how easy this pill went down. Par for the course, it was a super sugar coated version of reality that was designed for her “followers” to by the next e-essay to go on to the next sugar loaded step. It was freakin’ ridiculous, but a tidy little side biz for her for at least 6 months or so. She had a forum there that was quite busy for a time.
Until people caught on it was total bullshite.
I could go on and on, but you get the idea. It was both horrific and facinating to watch. The proverbial train wreck…….and as soon as someone spoke out against the cult………….POOF……….you were labeled a heretic and bannished to non-believers e-hell to burn with the likes of anyone who had sense enough to call BULLSHIT on this noise.
CONda Byrnes was supposed to come out with a “Secret II”, but unfortunately for her, she was not quick enough on the mark. All of her energy these days is spent DE-tracting the massive amounts of lawsuits that have been filed against her.
As for your friend……………while it is painful to watch, there really isn’t anything that you can do about it………they have to find their own way. Hopefully they will see the light sooner than later, or at least before they loose more money.
Keep in touch and enjoy Thom’s site (the hoot……….er……ah……..hotty he is!
Moon, Thanks again, I will be visiting Thoms site–I didn’t get sucked into The Secret–Thank Goodness-I didn’t even make it thru the entire Oprah show-All BS to me–Common sense has left the building—
#6 Carolsue~
Well, there is something to the Law of Attraction I feel, but as I stated in that article regarding Thom and “The Secret”, it is definately more complex and complicated.
Thom’s site is great, and he really has a great deal to offer. Hopefully he will be back to chat on David’s show in the near future:)
I have complete total 100% belief in the law of attraction and it has brought me so much good.
BUT the dvd “The Secret” (I haven’t read the book) is a glossed-over, whitewashed, and Hollywoodized presentation of the law of attraction. There’s some secret society of men conspiring to keep the law of attraction a secret?? Huh? Then why did Andrew Carnegie ask Napoleon Hill to write a book about it, a book published in 1960 called Think and Grow Rich?
I heard someone else describe the movie as a “magic pill” version of the story to make it popular even amongst those who are too lazy to actually focus their efforts and set goals and plan properly. Pretty accurate I think. And the people saying that your own suffering is because you didn’t know better–those are people who aren’t really good at thinking so they apply a blanket principle to every situation. The world’s easier to deal with if you pretend everything’s black and white.
So the law of attraction is very good. But it is not the same as what’s described in the secret, in my opinon. The Napoleon Hill book gives a much greater understanding of its power as a law of nature. He described how when in a heightened state of mental activity (from meditation, music, the emotion of sexual desire) your subconscience has access to some mysterious form of intelligence (he calls it infinite intelligence) that brings creative imagination to you and you recieve hunches that lead you to your vividly desired goal. Ie. you get creative ideas of how to work hard and put plans into action. None of this stuff about imagining a Ferrari and then having it appear in your driveway while you watch Scooby Doo.

THIS IS GREAT, lol, lol, lol~ I love it!
As I stated, I do believe in the Law of Attraction, but not in the sugar-coated candy version of Rhonda, et al.
They did a great disservice to many with that hype, and many of the “teachers” are still trying to shilll their “wares” all over the internet and in speaking engagements.
The one thing that has come out of all of this, is that I highly doubt that there will be a “”Secret II”, which, btw, was in the works before the lawsuits started to fly.
Not any more!
I read The Secret and I have Hot Tomales. You obviously didn’t use the power.
