Musings Friday Follies!
Jul 3rd, 2009 by BohemianMoon

Ya gotta rant about your boss? Your spouse? Your family or friends? Or maybe you just want to bitch about the world at large? Vent here!
Ya gotta problem? A burden shared is half a burden!
Ya gotta a couple of giggles to share? Laughter is the best medicine!
TGIF is here and so are Musings Friday Follies!
Let it out on any subject and clean the slate for the wonderful weekend ahead!
(No subject is taboo if presented with decorum, except of course, the Gosselin kids and the “C” word. However, now that we have the word “Twaffle”, the “C” word doesn’t matter so much any longer now does it?

Hey everyone~ Can you please keep my dad in your prayers/well wishes? He was taken by ambulance to the hospital this morning due to extreme dizziness, nausea and cold sweats that came on suddenly.
Anyway, I don’t mean to dump on all of you but my life has been more stressful lately than it has ever been between our two SN kiddos, running back and forth from UCLA (long arse commute), not knowing what we’re doing in the fall for school for Boo (my youngest who is in the UCLA program) and trying to juggle the kids at home and now my dad …..ughhhhhhhh I’m ready to blow a gasket. (Boo, my youngest has several challenges and is a full time job on his own….then our next youngest is legally blind…..then we have our two girls 10, and 14. They are treasures for sure…..but I’m just feeling pulled in 2 trillion directions and I’m questioning everything I’m doing with everyone right now. (Again so sorry for the rambling vent).
They are thinking he may have had a small stroke. He is 73 and still teaches school (he can’t afford to retire). He is truly my hero. He is amazing and has a heart of gold. We always say he’s getting the fast pass to heaven when he goes
Please pray that my dad will be ok. Thanks
Ah, Judy…blessings and prayers to your Dad and for you also.
Thoughts are with you Judy.
Lots of good wishes from here. You sound like a very strong person Judy, keep your faith strong. You and your dad will be in my prayers.
Judy, sending you and your family all good thoughts for strength and hope.
Judy ~ Praying for your dad and sending hugs your way.
Judy~
Saying prayers for your Dad and for you for strength to deal with everything. You have reminded us what is most important in life: our families. God Bless.
Judy I hope your dad will be okay. You have to much on your plate right now. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.
Hi,

Now for my uggg for the day..
My friend has a friend who’s husband is cheating on her with a 24 year old… Even sends her pics of him fishing with her.. Been going on for one year. She won’t leave the situation which is STUPID>>>> one year this 40 year old man has had a “friend”..
UGGGGG why do women do this?
Rant:
I am a freelance writer for an online content production company. I have written quite a number of popular articles, and am proud of them. I am sort of anal about self editing for grammar and punctuation, but once in a very great while something slips my radar.
Well on this particular site, the community is all about “support and friendliness” towards one another. If someone writes a great article, we commend them, and comment on it to help increase their page views.
Long story short, the new shininess hasn’t quite worn off for me there, so I get lots of emails with congrats and generally well wishing thoughts. Today I get an email from someone I’ve never spoken to.
“Message from XXXX
RE: …”in it’s Purest Form.” It’s is not the possessive, it means “it is.” ”
gee, thanks for the tip^^. I never would have figured that out if not for your genius observation. Please, forgive me my transgression of having ONE typo that I have never done before!
This may seem like a silly rant, I know, but it irks me.
Second rant: Who cares what Kate looks like in a bikini? I mean, really– with ALL of the multitude of sins she has compiled, are her thighs really the main concern? People, regardless of what they may claim, are not perfect. Talking about plastic surgery she may have, I get, as it was paid for by her kids hard work. Treating her husband like dirt? yeah, I get that too, as it proves what a fake she is– but her cellulite?? Come on people, let’s stick to the issues please.
Ok Rant over.
My oldest daughter will be coming home from an adventure. She is 20. She went to a friend`s house in Ohio to work/learn organic gardening and to work on zines.
She is having a bit of a culture shock but I think she is rolling with it.
The house is very large and is set up in commune type of living. No cell reception. No cable. No internet. No showers (one claw footed bathtub). No mirrors.
They eat what comes from the garden. All natural..and I mean everything. No bras, no shaving, minimal body washing, barefeet.
I am not knocking this at all..it would just have been funny to see our daughter`s face and how she is learning to cope without her creature comforts.
I think not texting or going online to chat with friends is killing her just a tad.
She and her sister are half black. They share a higher end hair straightener here at the house. We have an old one that is not so good in storage. Older sis had a fight with younger sis over taking the good straightener on the trip. It was an epic Afro hair struggle!
Big sis won, she took the appliance. Guess what?
She has not used it ONCE since she has been there. I guess she figured she would be natural like the people in her surroundings.
So I have been enjoying time with younger daughter, I have not had to cook ONE Vegan meal all week, and I have oodles of time on the Mac uninterrupted. I am going to miss that but I am glad she is on her way home soon.
I am growing mushrooms on my lawn. Not the magic kind, but the kind that grow in sun deprived, moisture enriched environments. The weather is an annoyance to many but a financial disaster for the small farmers in the area. Summer in Maine is a long sought reward for having survived the winter. Windows are thrown open to embrace the warm days and cool nights. Outdoor activities are engaged in with a frenzy because one knows time is fleeting. All seasons have their beauty but summer is so liberating: barefeet, baseball games, kayaking on the lake, bicycling to ice cream stands, campfires and smores and the sounds and memories of childhood. If anyone has some sun to spare, please send it in a northeasterly direction. Many thanks, cheers!
Sunshine or not, it sounds like you live in heaven
Heidi, why do you HAVE to cook vegan meals at all? She is 20. When mine went on to a food tangent, they became responsible for their meals. Glad she is having an organic experience. Bet her hair is enjoying the vacation!
Judy, will keep your Dad and your family in my thoughts.
Am I the only person that cannot STAND Johnny Depp? He always looks so creepy and dirty to me. Plays the same weird character, looks stranger every time. YUCK
Denny~

I am sure that you are not the only one
I happen to LOVE his work, and Tim Burton as well. I am looking forward to Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, and his twist on it. It is Tim Burton, you know it is going to be a little dark and twisted!

If anyone has some sun to spare, please send it in a northeasterly direction. Many thanks, cheers!
How long has it been raining there? It has been raining here for a week. My garden is doing ok, thus far, save for an attack of cuke beetles. What is the main crop there besides blueberries? Here it is corn and the rain has been great for it, thus far.
Being from Western NY and a recipient of lake effect snow for 5 months, I know how the season is short and fleeting
Sending you barrels of sunshine so you Mainers can get back to the business of summer!
XO!
Jordon~

I agree!
judy~
Please pray that my dad will be ok. Thanks
You have a lot going on, so sorry.
Prayers for strength to navigate this difficult time and prayers for your father’s health sent>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Keep the faith, and feel the hugs, and please keep us updated!
Heidi~
It was an epic Afro hair struggle!
That line cracked me up, ROFL!
The experience that your oldest daughter is having is a great one I am sure and be proud that she is navigating it so well
When she gets home, let us know her true impressions of that type of lifestyle, please
When I was younger, I spent some time in Vermont helping to build a house. They house we stayed in had no running water or electricity. It was also pre-cell phones and had an outhouse. There was a Coleman propane stove in which to cook on, that is it. We rigged up solar showers which allowed just enough water to wash off the soap if one was lucky. I lived that way for about two months. Actually, I could probably do ok without electricity, but a nice hot shower and a proper toilet? No way!
Thank you so much for all the great healing vibes, hugs and prayers! I love my Muser friends!!! We’ll know more this afternoon. They *think* he had a small stroke but they are not 100% sure yet.
I’ll keep everyone posted
Deezer, I am sorry for your friend. Have you talked to your friend?
Jordan, It sounds like that person was looking for something to pick on to make herself feel better? Don’t let it get you down. It sounds like you’re an awesome writer!
Heidi, I think this is going to be a great experience for your daughter. She will hopefully learn how to be more resourceful and learn self sustainability (is that the right term?). Maybe you can ask her to teach you how/what to cook since she was the one who went off on this little adventure? She can be your personal chef. (work it mama, use the old reverse psychology on her
)
Lifeisgoodinmaine, I have always dreamed of living in Maine. It is so gorgeous!
Denny, when Johnny Depp was all the rage in 21 Jump Street, I never got his appeal. All my friends had the posters and were so smitten with him. Now I’m 36, he’s back on the screen and my 14 year old thinks he’s all that and a bag of chips! I think he’s handsome but a little too mysterious for my taste
Thinking of you and your dad, Judy. Sound like you need a few minutes alone to recharge. People call it meditation, but, that’s just a fancy way of saying clear your mind and untangle it. Best wishes for your daddy, he sounds like a strong man.
Heidi, I lived the commune life back in the day..the company keeps you from missing the modern convieniences. It was a trip..lol. She’ll always remember it, though I’d be surprised it she adopts it as a way of life. Young people have to experiment. That was funny about the hair, typical sisters.
Jordan, people like that are so irritating, all you can do is delete it and ignore them. You have to wonder what’s wrong with them, that they pick on some little thing like it’s a world war. I get people like that too, and I’ve told people I’m dyslexic and can’t spell. They continue to point out mistakes like they think they’re helping. Yeah, rearrange my brain dork. At least you know you can spell, I don’t know what pleasure that person got from insulting you, and it was an insult, but, fark ‘em.
Palin RESIGNS!!! Whoo hoo, all the crazy bitches are toppling!

That is what I like about him. That and the fact that he doesnt’ do the Hollywood “Here I am, LOOK at ME, LOOK at ME”, thing. Oh and his acting, love his acting.

Bwahhahhhahah! LOVE that line
WASILLA, Alaska – Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin says she is resigning from office.
She didn’t say why she decided to step down, but the surprise announcement stirred speculation that she would focus on a bid for the 2012 Republican nomination for president.
The former Republican vice presidential candidate made the announcement from her home in suburban Wasilla on Friday morning. She said she would step down July 26.
A bid for the 2012 presidential election?
(please excuse me but I think I’m due back on the planet earth)

Megan’s head must be exploding right now – she loves Palin and spreading lies about people, and no I am not insinuating people that love Palin are vicious, vile and mentally unstable liars, though obviously they could be, as evidence by Megan’s behaviour of late.
Judy – Prayers for your Dad and for your family . . . May God bless you all!
My Friday rant? So sorry if I have shared this before, but . . .
I lost my job with a major telecommunications company about three years ago. They “retired” me.
I was pre-retirement age, of course – and since then haven’t been able to find any job paying even half as much as I made before . And being a single woman, with no other source of income, I have had to tap continuously into my 401k that I rolled over into an IRA. This can’t go on forever.
I am commuting three hours a day to a dead-end job – and thank God – I HAVE a job.

Gahhh! Stop the world…I wanna get off!

(please excuse me but I think I’m due back on the planet earth)
Something is brewing…………….people usually do not step down from their gubernatorial position for no reason at all, even if their State hates them. I bet an investigation is underway that we will be hearing about readily.
Something is brewing…………….people usually do not step down from their gubernatorial position for no reason at all, even if their State hates them.
Would that be typical? To resign your position that far in advance? (I mean, I realize she’d actually need to go back to college and pay attention this time) Do potential candidates normally step down from their government position 3 years prior to the next election?
Or by something brewing, did you mean some huge scandal we’ve not learned of yet?
“A bid for the 2012 presidential election?”
Well, if a 3rd rate comedian can be elected Senator of Minn…….
I am probably one of the few Republicans here, but I too – agree – Palin wouldn’t step down unless there is something going on behind the scenes that we haven’t yet heard about. I wish her and her family well.
I bet an investigation is underway that we will be hearing about readily.
Shoot, I missed that line. Sorry about that. Or did you subsequently add that?
Let me say a bit more about why I am cooking the Vegan meals. She just ended work last week. So she did volunteering in the mornings with a community garden initiative, then worked at an after school daycare until 7pm. So she would be too tuckered out to cook her dinner. Now that the daycare job is over and she will be working (not for free) with the garden people..she can cook her own meals.
She has been Vegan for 4 years now and I am an old pro at cooking it. She can just be a picky shit about what she wants to eat.
I forgot to say Pat and Moon. There was a problem with the only running toilet in the house. So she had to go out to the outhouse at midnight.. ROFL!
She has a wasp nest in the bedroom where she is sleeping. This girl freaks over bugs. She says that they do not bother her when it is cloudy out or at night.
I will give a full report on her adventure.
Oh, this was her first plane trip ever. And she did it alone.
Heidi – I have been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for about 10 years. Bless your heart for cooking VEGAN meals!
Pippa,
Which telecommunications company, if you do not mind saying?
I used to work for SNET (southern new england telephone), that turned into SBC, that turned into AT&T.
I was not there for the AT&T conversion. I was in the armpit of the company..operator services. *what city, please?*
I suffered with them for 5 years. Became sick and was able to collect social security. They bamboozled me out of my LTD.
Glad I am done with them.
Pippa,
She would have starved if I did not learn. I would try out the recipe while she watched. The next time she would try out the recipe while I watched..and then she would know how to do it.
I like to cook so learning it was fun.
I eat everything we make and I have to tell you..tempeh is MUY DISGUSTING (to me).
So is TVP..yuck.
All my baking is Vegan now. You cannot tell the difference if I did not tell you and it is better for you.
There are some to die for cupcakes that I make that I will share if anyone wants them. You go to vegan yum yum online and look up Vampire bites cupcakes. Vanilla cupcakes with a raspberry filling.
My son dating a vegan for quite a while. Her parents were divorced and she lived with her dad from about age 12. I was incredibly impressed with her devotion but she ate out a LOT. She loved french fries and knew what type of fat was used at every restaurant. She finally gave it up at about 18 and became a pesco-poletarian (or something like that – she added chicken and fish).
I did not last long at being a vegetarian but I did try. I admire other and their devotion. Heck, we raised cattle!
Palin still had a track record to establish. I believe that is what hurt her most in the last election. She NEEDED that job for all the viable experience!
Is she not out there on some runnners Mag challenging Obama to a race? Ha Ha
Maybe an illness? Maybe her child with Down’s has a complication.
Here was what she said when she resigned (I’m trying to study it to figure out what it might mean):
“Once I decided not to run for re-election, I also felt that to embrace the conventional Lame Duck status in this particular climate would just be another dose of politics as usual, something I campaigned against and will always oppose,” Palin said in a statement released by her office.
“It is my duty to always protect our great state. With that in mind, my family and I determined that it is best to make a difference this summer, and I am willing to change things, so that this administration, with its positive agenda, its accomplishments, and its successful road to an incredible future, can continue without interruption and with great administrative and legislative success,” she said.
Hmm…”in this particular climate”.
Heidi -
When I was unwillingly “retired” (at below age 50), it was BellSouth. Now, they’ve come full circle and are back to AT&T (which is what they were when I was first hired on 30 years ago as a long distance operator).
I went lacto-ovo vegetarian “cold turkey” (no pun intended).
Just stopped eatting meat one weekend. I feel better for it.
She went vegetarian first for a year and then went full blown vegan after that.
Being an operator is a thankless job. I did supervisor towards the end. Ugh! The real world has NO idea what crap we have to put up with.
Heidi -
I remember “back in the day” . . . we ACTUALLY had a little old lady blind woman who would call in and say “CENTRAL!!! CENTRAL!!! GET ME THAT DRUGSTORE DOWN ON CAPITOL STREET!”
(For real!)
And we would connect her, of course!
OK, I’m stumped. Can’t really figure out what it means.
My analysis:
Once I decided not to run for re-election, I also felt that to embrace the conventional Lame Duck status in this particular climate ie: because now I’m stuck with Obama and the democrats until 2012…yuck.
would just be another dose of politics as usual, something I campaigned against and will always oppose ie: because I’m a Republican who was running against a Democrat…DUH!
It is my duty to always protect our great state. With that in mind, my family and I determined that it is best to make a difference this summer ie: so my family and I will be renovating houses to protect the citizens of our great state from homelessness all summer.
and I am willing to change things, so that this administration, with its positive agenda, its accomplishments, and its successful road to an incredible future, can continue without interruption and with great administrative and legislative success ie: because my Lt. governor who will take over for me will not have to deal with this “climate named Obama”….oh wait, he will, won’t he…never mind.
I’m out of ideas. Not sure what’s going on.
Shoot…the bolding got all messed-up. Everything after each “ie:” was not supposed to be bolded. Was this because I needed to separate each one with a space?
I need to preface this rant by apologizing to you all because I have a feeling I will be venting pretty much every Friday on the same topic: my mother-in-law. Oh, you remember her…the one who lives 3 minutes away, right?
Well, after last weekend when she showed up at my house on Saturday night when we had company to “drop off” their leftovers from eating out because she thought “the kids might like them” and subsequently staying for 4 hours, I have reached my limit. They also came over Sunday night because we were grilling out. Oh, and Friday afternoon because my mom was over helping me pull up some shrubs in my backyard that I have always hated because she wanted to see my mom. Right.
Then there were the comments she made to my mom at lunch on Tuesday about how she was hesitant to tell us about her job interview out here because she didn’t want to feel “pressured” to move out here close to us because she would “NEVER take a job JUST to be near family”; it would have to be somethings she really, really liked. And she is “so excited” about her job and it is just an “added bonus” that the job happens to be close to her son and grandkids. Nice. Obviously I didn’t tell my husband what she said because how hurtful would it be to hear your mom say something like that? So the ONLY reason she moved here was because of her fabulous new job? That we are just an “added bonus”?? My mom said she was in shock when this comment was made and didn’t know what to say, so she just took a really long drink of her iced tea. My question is: if she didn’t move here to be near us, then why the fuck is she at our house all the damn time????
She met us at the neighborhood pool today. We are going to a baseball game tonight (granted my parents are going, too). And then she wants to get together tomorrow and Sunday, too! I did somewhat stand up to her and said that I didn’t want to make any plans beyond tonight because my husband has been working some crazy horrible hours lately and my kids are really missing him. They were both crying for him the other night at bedtime. I told her they needed quality time with their daddy and we just needed to take it easy this weekend. I then told my husband the same thing because usually when she doesn’t like my answer, she goes to my husband and pretends she hasn’t talked to me yet. I just hope he doesn’t get sucked in by guilt!
Ok…sorry for the long rant. It’s been building up all week!! I’m sure I’ll be back next Friday with the latest installment. *sigh*
Pippa~
I am probably one of the few Republicans here
And we LOVE you! MMMMMWWWWWWUUUUUUAAAAAAAAH!

I think that she is being investigated, more so than we have heard publicly.
Jeanna~
Maybe an illness? Maybe her child with Down’s has a complication.
If it were re: her child, I am sure she would have mentioned it.
We hit the mall today with every other person on the planet who had the day off. While DH was getting his hair whacked off, DD and I shopped and then eventually wound up in the Verizon store to phondle the phones. Yes, that is the big draw for me, the phones are out there and I can test drive the little darlings and fiddle with the font sizes and see if I can, well, actually SEE the stuff on the phone. So, as I am merrily tapping the keys on the phone of my dreams (and just because it comes in blue? Not a deciding factor at all! I swear) I hear some dork of a guy standing next to me saying loudly “Look at all these people just standing around playing with the phones while people who are actually going to be buying them can’t get near them! It’s so rude to just stand there and play with them while there are people standing around wanting to look at them.” I sensed DD stiffen and step a bit farther away from me. My first thought? “oh no you are NOT seriously whining because YOU can’t play on the phone right now?” and I just snorted a little (translation, “bite me”) and kept right on doing what I was doing. Never underestimate my powers of tuning out the idiots of the world.
Now seriously, Palin resigns? Really? Wow. I felt sorry for McCain, she really hurt him in the election.

I love that line, lol. You are like Hubs, he loves phone stores and phondling them

I feel that she hurt McCain as well. As a surprise to you all, I am sure, early in the campaigning I was seriously considering McCain. Contrary to popular belief just because I am a registered Democrat, doesn’t mean that I didn’t pay close attention to the entire campaign of all the candidates or potential candidates. I was unsure of Obama for a long time, actually.
As for my loathing of Sarah Palin, it had absolutely nothing to do with her being a woman or a “strong” woman, and everything to do with her level of intelligence, her lack of experience, and her woeful lack of an understanding of what was happening in the world.
I don’t label myself anymore in politics. I primarily vote Republican, however, I never have and never will vote for a Bush to go into office. There is only one bush I would have voted in and that was Hillary. Yeah I kill me…. I actually hope she runs again. I had no respect for Sarah Palin. She was a joke (my own opinion), I hope I do not offend anyone.
Kat~
Ok…sorry for the long rant. It’s been building up all week!! I’m sure I’ll be back next Friday with the latest installment. *sigh*
Is there any way that you could sit down with her and come to a common ground that they need to call to see if you are busy or entertaining others before she just drops in? That is simple common courtesy and social etiquette, though I know with some mother in laws, common courtesy just goes by the way side.
In the meantime, keep your chin up and know Musings is always here for ya!
I worked for the state of Arkansas long enough to develop a total loathing for the Clintons. I have basically become apolitical. Odd, because for years it was all I talked about.
I am fearful for the future of our country. I see no bright lights in either party.
I just watched Sarah Palin give her announcement…out on her lawn, I guess it was…and I have to say that esp. for her age and having 5 children, she is one really attractive woman (I’d love to look like her)….but she was rambling in that deer-caught-in-the-headlights way she did when asked about her international relations experience last year. She spoke for quite a while and I honestly couldn’t tell you what she said, except for “I know when it’s time to pass the ball”.
I know what it’s like when politicians are trying to be tactfully evasive (give you the run-around) but with her…I don’t even know what to think…she was like a Miss America contestant who didn’t know the answer to a question…but she’d not been asked a difficult-to-answer question and was only giving what I would assume had been a prepared explanation. Kinda stammering, flight of ideas, nervous…..i don’t even know what to think.
I had to assume that either 1) there’s some huge scandal yet to be revealed, or 2) she’s crazy, or 3) I’m crazy.
dee3~

You are not crazy. Hubs and I have watched a few times and have no idea what she was saying. Neither do most of the news commentators, lol!
I wish everyone well with their current struggles and Judy, I’ll be thinking of your dad. I hope everyone is able to get out and have some fun to celebrate tomorrow. Buy sparklers, they make me happy no matter what.
As far as Palin is concerned, I find it odd that she had her family with her during the announcement. To me, that signals personal reasons and not a political maneuver. Of course, I have no way of knowing but I do hope that she and her family are all healthy. I can’t imagine that resigning could help her political career in anyway.
PALIN RESIGNED!!!! I have to put on MSNBC now!!! Bye, bye, Sarah! Oh – MSNBC just said there is a “criminal investigation underway.”
Andrea Mitchell said that sources tell her that Palin is leaving politics for good!
Sarah Palin and Take Greedslin have at least one thing in common – they make no sense when they talk! Babble, babble…
Merette~
Andrea Mitchell said that sources tell her that Palin is leaving politics for good!
There have been opposing reports on this. One station says she is leaving politics all together and the next say no she is not. We will know soon enough, though!

I do not feel sorry for McCain at all. His reason for picking her in the first place was an utter INSULT to intelligent people everywhere. Just because she’s a woman, DOES NOT mean she is qualified for the office of VP of the US or as President should something happen to McCain. She is an insult to educated, smart, dynamic women everywhere. McCain thought he was pulling a fast one on the American public – put a women in there as a running mate – and I win. Well, John McCain, a hick from Alaska who has not a fucking clue is NOT going to cut it. That says a lot about how out to lunch McCain is. I think he has severe dementia.

Pippa, keep putting your resumes out there…and praying. There will be something to come along that tweeks your interest. I too was laid off 3 yrs. ago, at age 61. Unfortunately, in the Charlotte area, there was little for an Executive asst/adm asst. that is 61 yrs old. They had their pick of a 100 w/probably better qualifications than me, and younger for sure! The last 3 yrs have been a challenge, and now, at almost 65, I am discouraged. If it’s any consolation, taking $$ from your IRA is probably not too damaging, as mine is worthless to me right now. I fear I won’t see recovery in enough time to help me out.
I sympathize w/you. Hang in there! Be strong!

But I am so very tired. This is not what I worked so many years for .
I missed this Pippa! I am so sorry
Keep the faith, though, something will shake. Don’t loose your faith!
You too, Linda!
Hugs!
Interesting J&K analogy with this Palin situation. On hardball on MSNBC, a Republican strategist, Todd Harris was saying that SP had always run her own campaign and that this latest move is another reason why the sayings that a lawyer who represents himself is his own worst client or that a doctor who treats himself is…etc. He also said Palin had made a mistake when she allowed the David Letterman thing to go on for so long because if she wanted to be taken seriously as a potential future candidate, she’d want to….well, he used political terminology but was essentially saying she’d want to stay out of the tabloids and only be visible in legitimate political media venues.
All I could think of was how Kate thinks she knows how to run her own career better than anyone else and how she thinks any publicity is good publicity. And this was a Republican strategist…but a pretty smart one, IMO.

Pippa,
I know that there is stimulus money being funneled in to states as “workforce reinvestment.” This could apply, I believe to schooling or re-training for other jobs for those in a situation similar to your’s. I do not know what state you live in, but I wonder if you might go on to your state’s website and see if they have anything to offer. Just a thought, Pippa. I feel really bad for you – this is a very tough situation to be in. Isn’t there some way that you can “re-invent” yourself/your skills and enter another industry? I do not know your situation, Pippa, but what about looking at nonprofit organizations, including academic institutions? Maybe you can find something that will offer you a reasonable salary, benefits, and a little pension plan. Just a thought, Pippa.
FYI, for those that may be interested, MSNBC is going to run the entire Palin resignation speech at 7:30 EST.
I am glad that she isn’t stepping down until the end of the month. My mom is vacationing in Alaska for the next couple of weeks and someone needs to protect her from the Russians (wink, wink).

I am watching it. This will be the third time we will have seen it in it’s entirety, and I still don’t know what she is saying. She is delivering her speech in a frantic, but rambling manner. I don’t get it.
When the whole election thing was going down I really feared a republican victory. I don’t think I would have been half as apprehensive if McCain had a different candidate for VP running with him. That’s all. And the response from my friend who is a dyed in the wool republican? “but she’s hot!” Oy to the vey is all I can say. And I don’t think McCain picked her or even knew what he was getting into. The republican party on the other hand, well, maybe they know better now. Seriously, the woman is a shallow crick at best.
And Kat, re: your MIL? Well, when you perfect a strategy for her, please share. Though there are 1350 miles between my MIL and myself the manipulations that woman can pull from such a distance are just mind boggling. Yes, and the whole “she’ll go to my husband and act like she hasn’t even talked to me” just rang so true to form for my MIL. Throw in a hefty dose of self-centeredness and a side of out right favoritism and you’ve got a whale of a good time for those not in the inner circle. And she wonders why I never visit! Ugh.

Um, could she be….overly medicated?
OK, just got done watching the 18 minute speech again. And though I honestly can’t figure out most of it….though it did seem to partly be a great tourist promo for the state of Alaska…..I think that she might have been saying…possibly….that she’s quitting because people have been picking on her with stupid ethics things like holding a fish in a photo and it’s costing the govt. too much money to defend her so she’s doing this to do Alaska a favor.
Hmm…..it’s not her fault…people are picking on her. Who does that remind me of?
I just finished watching the speech for the first time in its entirety. I must say, I’m baffled. Like her or not, the woman has always been able to give a good SCRIPTED speech and this had to be scripted. She just seems so flustered which seems really out of character for her. The whole press conference is disjointed at best. I hope that she didn’t just crack under the public scrutiny because I don’t want anyone to hold her up as an example of why women shouldn’t run for higher office. I disagree with politics but I’m worried about her. If she has future political aspirations, this isn’t the way to go about announcing them.
Also, what the heck is wrong with the camera people at MSNBC? It looks like the Blair Witch kids shot this press conference.
Merette – Thank you so MUCH for your suggestion! I earned a computer science degree on the company tuition plan and – since leaving – have applied for everything from entry level clerical up. I was, in fact, told that I was “over-qualified” on my first job interview post-company and told them “I just want a job!”
Also, what the heck is wrong with the camera people at MSNBC?
I could be wrong but during the entire first half, her baby was fussing and crying in the background and I think they either quieted him down eventually or took him out of the area because things became much clearer once the baby noises stopped. Honestly, if you’re gonna have that much difficulty staying on focus when speaking, I think you should really think twice about having a baby there.
OK…the speech is on CNN right now.

Merette, while I know you aren’t talking about the situation I find myself in, maybe you can explain this to me. I went to AARP 3 mos. ago, to see about employment. Filled out the papers, etc. but no testing was done. A mo. or so later, they called and asked me to come in. Thought they would maybe test my computer/typing/internet, etc. skills at that time. Nope, in talking about 20 min. w/them, I realized I had a job. It was presented to me that it was part of an Obama package (for seniors?) in which AARP would be my employer, but send me out on a job. As it went, I am working pt. time at Juvenile Justice Dept. Supposedly this “program” is over June of ‘10. Anyway, I can only work 18 hrs. at wk. AND at minimum wage, even that is not enough to get me out of this hole I am in. Though I understand, minimum wage goes up at the end of this mo. to $7.25/hr. Right now it is 6.55/hr. I think, my dtr. in an attempt to help me out, asked me if I could keep the kids 2 days/wk. this summer and she would pay me. Said she’d rather pay me than a daycare place. I am keeping my 6/yo and 3 yr. old grandkids Tues. and Thurs., and she pays me well. But, of course that ends in about 7 wks.
Actually, after all my yapping, my question to you Merette is, do you know what this program is, apparently for seniors, under Obama? I know nothing of it, and bless their hearts, the folks at AARP are somewhat vague or uninformed also.

____
Pippa,
I am sure you are over-qualified. That’s why I am thinking that a nonprofit or academic institution would love you. For example, while I don’t know the details of your resume and where you live, many, many higher education institutions are offering an on-line option for courses. At my institution, we have a whole department which is dedicated to coordinating and managing online learning. The jobs range from more entry-level tech jobs to mid-range specialist and managers and up. Online courses are increasing all the time and they always need people. Also, there might well be other jobs you would be perfect for that are not in this area. Half the battle for people in your situation is the realization that they have to “re-invent” themselves to survive in the current economy. But once they do it, it usually works out. Good luck, Pippa and let me know how things work out for you!!!!
To Pippa and our other job seekers-
I was watching or listening to a show about looking for work and they were saying networking and your contacts is the best way to go. Keep yourself out there at church, clubs, social events, etc.
My husband lost his job last November and had a new, better job in May- through one of his contacts from his old job.
So keep in contact with Christmas cards, emails, whatever. Seems like the old fashioned sending out the resumes just isn’t working like it used to!
As for Sarah Palin……seems weird that she would step down for political aspirations. She didn’t give up her duties at all for the campaign, why now? Why today? She did seem flustered or po’d. Maybe some sort of scandal is going to come out and she stepped down before it could be demanded of her. She sure has everyone buzzing, though!

Linda~
I do not know specifically what the Obama program is as it relates to seniors. It sounds like this a “workforce reinvestment” program. I can do a little research on this for you if you want. You are in Charlotte, SC, correct? If you have worked as an exec. asst./admin. asst., you might want to think about nonprofit jobs. They would pay you more than the mimimum wage you are making through AARP and nonprofits tend to not have that kind of “preference” for hiring younger people, if you know what I mean. Anyway, now I am curious and I will look into the Obama thing. I’ll get back to you.
Linda and Pippa,
To look for jobs in the nonprofit sector, go to:
www (dot) idealist (dot) org
It lists nonprofit jobs all over the US. You just put in your location and the kind of position you are looking for and you can search. Hope this helps!

Merette and Mimittens –
I have concentrated on and developed a “relationship” with many HR hiring managers at THE local university/hospital here (The University of Alabama at Birmingham). They seem to be all “in my corner” and have recommended me for many jobs – and I have been on many interviews. It just hasn’t happened yet.
I do so appreciate your suggestions and concern. I really do. Please keep me in your prayers.
I’m just reading back on all of the very sweet replies to my posting and I just want to THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR REPLIES!!! They mean so much more than you can every know!
I have been losing money for the past three years in trying to supplement my income with my savings, but looks like I have gained a whole lot of friends.
In listening to Anderson Cooper, it sounds like Gov. Palin’s speech was scripted, but she apparently deviated from it considerably. I have read there is an article in the next Vanity Fair, not yet on newsstand, not so politely entitled, “It Came from Wasilla”. Could there be anything in that article? I hope it was just a case of she wanted to be more available to her family, especially her son Tripp. Otherwise, if it is an attempt at a bid for the 2012 election, she didn’t present herself very well in her resignation speech.
Just got off the phone with my mother, the staunch squirrel shooting democrat. Her and her cronies take on the whole Palin thing? Maybe she’s preggers. I kid you not.
Kat,
I feel for you re: the “familiarity breeds contempt” MIL.
I had a terrible in-law problem once. Until I found the perfect solution in an Ann Landers column. I had a very professional looking sign made at a shop that makes plaques and trophies. It was about 4″ x 4″ and I screwed it into the front door frame, next to the doorbell button. It said:
If you didn’t bother to call first
don’t bother to knock!
And oh, how it worked – HA!

Pippa,
That’s great!! If you have developed a relationship with the HR people, this is an excellent development! Just be sure that you call your contact on a monthly basis to “check in.” It will happen – you just have to keep calling and praying. I will definitely keep you in my prayers. It is really scary to be in a situation like that, but I’m sure you will get something. Summer is often a good time to get a job in higher ed – since people tend to leave then and they have to fill their positions. Just sit tight – something really great is out there for you!!!

I just did a “quick and dirty” check on the stimulus funds in NC. A lot of this funding (as I understand it – and I am NOT an expert!) is given out in the form of grant funds to various organizations. Maybe AARP applied for these grant funds and got them. One of the areas that NC wants the stimulus funds to go into is criminal justice – so if you were placed in a position in juvenile justice, this would make sense. Here is the link to NC stimulus funds (where they have determined where they want the money to go). So – this will tell you in what areas jobs are available and covered by NC stimulus funding.
http://www.ncrecovery.gov/news/PressReleaseDetail.aspx?newsItemID=13
Moon (and Linda),
I just posted a comment about stimulus funds in NC and it is stuck in moderation as I put a link up. Just wanted to let you know so it doesn’t go into spam.
Thanks!

I hope it was just a case of she wanted to be more available to her family, especially her son Tripp.
Then she should have said her children were the issue. While that would probably have been political suicide, what she just pulled is just as bad for her potential political career, assuming that she is interested in pursuing one.
Plus she just showed all the young girls and women that were looking to her as a role model, that she gives up and does not follow through with her commitments. If I had been an Alaskan that voted for and supported her, I will be pissed that she bailed for no reason (that I can ascertain) at all.
There is more to this story to be sure.

Thanks Merette! I tried googling it but no luck. I am in the Charlotte NC area, but you are somewhat correct. I live in a suburb of Charlotte, but it is in SC. First little burg you hit after coming through Charlotte on your way south on I-77. It’s called Ft. Mill SC, famous for being theprevious home to Jim and Tammy Faye Baker, whose land btw, is about 5 miles down the road from me. It has all been developed into businesses, as well as and homes and townhomes, plus and shops. I could not believe how much land they had owned, it is huge.
Anyway, my job is actually in Rock Hill, SC. When I was searching for jobs after losing mine (in a non-profit btw in Charlotte) I did look mostly in Charlotte, while the work force to pull from is much larger, there are also more jobs available. But, I think I’ve kinda given up on Charlotte, as SC seems more receptiive to employment for seniors. I’ve met a no. of ladies who seem to be in my age range. Health-wise, I am no longer able to take on any “big” demanding job. I can’t work 50+ hr. work weeks any longer. What I am doing now, actually is somewhat to my liking. I would prefer to be busier and using my skills much more than I am. I am hoping they might be interested in employing me after June 2010. But, it is a state job, and the state appears to be struggling. However, the woman I am helping at this job, has NO computer skills and was still doing labels, envelopes, etc. on the typewriter til I came! Now I’m doing all that as well as things the director had not been able to use current lady to do, such as org. charts, newsletters, etc. AND, she says she is retiring in 1-2 yrs. (Also, Gov. Sanford’s hijinks probably aren’t putting our state in a great light right now!) LOL

My first experience in lovemaking was with an animal and it was wonderful. I become one with the primal force that is nature. I touched the phallus of the creative life energy that surrounds everything that draws air. The moonbeams danced upon my naked white flesh as fido introduced me to the eternal. That is how and why and when I knew that I was here on this planet to lead the bestial to the celestial. To draw the sheeple to me. To be a light in the darkness. Sometimes I have my husband David bark for me to put me back in time of where i experienced enlightenment.
Heidi…wasp nest in the bedroom and an outhouse! Frick! That kid will be home in a week. You’d better air out her room and turn down the bed. Jeeminy christmas, what did they move into an abandoned house that was free if they fix it up? Been there, done that. You usually find out it needs a roof, has no plumbing and is haunted by a psycho perv. Yikes.
Fido called, he has an attorney and he’s suing you for sexual harassment. He barked something about bad touching and Viagra. Then he threw up. I don’t speak dog, but, I’m guessing it wasn’t as good for him.

” I have always dreamed of living in Maine.” What a great first line in a book that would be…maybe someday!
I knew Maine would be my home when I first visited my husband who was working a summer job. It had everything we wanted: great four season activities, affordable housing, professional job opportunities. What I didn’t realize then was how much I would come to appreciate the honest, hard working people and what a great place this was to raise children. I’m sure many towns throughout the US are great places to live but the northern two thirds of Maine is like a big small town. People don’t put on airs here and everyone is approachable from the Governor whose wife was a local school teacher to a very famous horror writer. Maine has four members of Congress: the senators are Republican females and the members of the House are Democrats, one male and one female. An independent voice is prized over blindly following the party line. One of the Senators was re-elected in the last election while the state voted for Obama. Many flights carrying troops to and from Iraq land at an airport in the area where I live and every single flight is met by local citizens, no matter the hour. The “greeters” wish them a safe tour or welcome them home with cellphones and cookies. I guess the people here are just down to earth, ordinary folk. No place is perfect, but for me, Maine is home and as Dorothy said, “there’s no place like home.”

“How long has it been raining there?”
Of the 30 days in June, there have been 3 sunny days, 4 partly cloudy, 5 cloudy days and 18 days with rain! Potatoes and broccoli are large crops but all crops are struggling and the fields are so wet the farmers can’t cull the crops or deal with the insect infestations.

Hahahahaha! That was great!
I keep watching her speech/announcement over and over. I’m fascinated and stunned at the same time. Basketball, Alaskan history, refrigerator magnets, fishing…..I don’t know what to think.
She’s either lost her mind entirely or there has to be some huge scandal that will explain this.

UGH! The insect infestations with the wet weather are horrid. I am micro farming here, or attempting to anyway, and I had a bad attack of cucumber beetles. Spent part of the day picking them
I spent a little time in Biddeford when Web Boy was a baby. I love Maine. I wanted to move up to the Rockland or Rockport area, and part of me still does. I was reading, though, on the city-data forums for that area that natives or long timers welcome the summer people because of the obvious boost to the economy, but are all too happy when they go home. As for transplants, the long timers don’t welcome them as much once they find out they aren’t leaving. That was the general flavor there for that part of Maine from those posting, anyway. Is there any truth to that?
Hubs and I would like to renovate another old home after this one, but would be looking to stay for the rest of our days. Well where ever we end up and Scotland. As I stated, I love Maine. Golly, I’m starting to lean toward scandal for the Palin resignation. I googled Alaska newspapers, then clicked links for blogs….seems there has been some Ted Stevens type questions about thier home her husband and his buddies built on Lake Lucille, same time frame as the Wasilla Sports Complex, with materials that seem to be commercial, no permits, and the usual favors for contracts for campaign contributions.
Im sorry but WHY didnt Palins other children NOT know their own mother was pregnant till after the baby was born?
BTW I was watching tv when Budd Dwyer killed himself live. I was also home when the Challenger crashed and Reagan was shot.
I also remember being 2 yrs old watching the moon when the first moon landing happened. (personally I think its odd that we habent gone back in years!)
That is the type of thing that took down our past gov. of CT, John Rowland.
Have your vacation home comped, spend some time at Camp Cupcake.
Preesi, they knew she was pregnant but they did not know the baby was Down Syndrome.

Aren’t you the lady that baked the penis cookies?
It is so interesting that some Republican strategists are calling Sarah Palin’s resignation “brilliant.” Now she can trapse around the lower forty-eight and draw huge crowds while she campaigns for other aspiring pols. Let me get this straight. She wants other people to get elected, but after she gets elected she leaves office so she won’t be a” lame duck.” This makes zero sense. Every politician who gets elected will eventually be a lame duck. She wants to get a head start on 2012 IMO, and the people who voted for her in Alaska be damned. Oh, and that “third rate comedian” from Minnisota did graduate cum laude from Harvard.

Mimittens,
I find it interesting that Palin made her “announcement” on the Friday before a holiday. In the news business, this is the best time to do these kinds of things because the major news outlets drop it over the holiday (or weekend) and then Palin will maintain a very low profile as best she can. I think there is some major shit going on behind the scenes and ahe figured she would give it up now while the getting out is easier. I do not believe this has anything to do with a planned run for president in 2012. I think her husband may be involved in some major shit as well. While I know I am speculating on every level, I do think Palin will be facing some SERIOUS charges. Just my opinion.
Denny no her other kids DID NOT know that their own mother was pregnant.

Hey everyone~ Can you please keep my dad in your prayers/well wishes? He was taken by ambulance to the hospital this morning due to extreme dizziness, nausea and cold sweats that came on suddenly.
They are thinking he may have had a small stroke. He is 73 and still teaches school (he can’t afford to retire). He is truly my hero. He is amazing and has a heart of gold. We always say he’s getting the fast pass to heaven when he goes.
Judy~
I have been meaning to respond to your post, but with all the activity on this entry today, it has been hard to keep up! Anyway, I wanted to tell you that I will keep you and your dad in my prayers. I know how tough it is to have a scare with a parent. I went through this with my mom seven years ago when I almost lost her. She had cancer – which was cured, but the damn chemo almost killed her. She will be 83 in a few weeks and lives independently in a senior apartment community about five miles from me. She is doing pretty well considering all she has gone through medically. Please keep us posted as to how he is doing. Prayers and hugs to you, Judy.
“Struggling to accept that her child would be born with Down syndrome and fearful of public criticism of a governor’s pregnancy, Ms. Palin had concealed the news that she was expecting even from her parents and children until her third trimester.”
The New York Times.
My SIL and BIL have lived in Wasilla/Eage River for over 20 years. Their grandchildren went to school with Palin’s children and my BIL used to fly up to the Slopes with Todd all the time.
I have seen the TV interview where she talks about her pregnancy and shows her rounded belly.

Merette, THANK YOU! You are the best! I really appreciate your expertise! That’s what I should have been plugging in…stimulus plans! How’d you get so smart? I appreciate all you ladies here on Moon’s site! Pippa and Judy, I got you (and your dad) covered in my prayers!

I earned a computer science degree on the company tuition plan and – since leaving – have applied for everything from entry level clerical up. I was, in fact, told that I was “over-qualified” on my first job interview post-company and told them “I just want a job!”
I’d never heard of this until last week, but there’s a program called ‘underemployment’. The states keep it pretty much a secret (I found the word ONE time on the MI state unemployment website with no explanation of what it is). Anyway, apparently if your hours have been reduced, your pay has dropped, etc, this program helps make up the difference. From what I gather, you file the same application as if you were applying for unemployment. It can’t hurt to try – all they can do is say no.

Oh, and that “third rate comedian” from Minnisota did graduate cum laude from Harvard.
With a degree in political science.
If I would have Googled “House-Gate”, I would have saved alot of time! She’s a goner.

As for the veritable genius, #96, who posted here, please use caution when inserting those fireworks up your fermenting shiz hole this July 4th. Your ass hair and dingleberries finally grew back after last year’s incident, and I hate seeing bad things happen to fucking idiots.

Why oh why did she have to choose to make this announcement late this afternoon……with no Daily Show, no Colbert show and no news on MSNBC? As a news hound, I’m pulling my hair out in frustration.
One of the reasons that they made the announcement today and particularly when there is no news shows on MSNBC.
I can’t wait for Monday! I love Jon Stewart, Rachel Maddow and Keith Olberman.

Were the posters from Massachusetts?:) Mainers don’t care for people from away who complain about how “backwards” the state is and want to change it and not necessarily for the better. A recent Governor was an Independent who originally was from Virginia. He served two terms I believe. He was a businessman who valued his employees’ work ethic. Humility goes a long way here. I’ve heard many variations on a Martha Stewart story shortly after she bought a summer “cottage” on Mount Desert Island (pronounced dessert and Calais is pronounced Callous -go figure). Supposedly, Martha was in a hurry to be waited on in a local market and was quite inpatient and said do you know who I am? The man behind her said, I am David Rockefeller and it’s custom here to wait your turn. True or not it demonstrates what is valued in Maine.
I have a question for you as it seems that everything north or west of NYC is considered “upstate”. My daughter attends college in Geneva and I would consider it “western” but it has been called “upstate”. She loves her school but is a bit disappointed that it is not in the snow belt and gets far less snow than she expected. We always breathe a sigh of relief when we are through Massachusetts and onto the NYThruway:)
I can’t wait for Monday! I love Jon Stewart, Rachel Maddow and Keith Olberman.
Oh, me too! And they didn’t even have Chris Matthews on Hardball tonight, the last news show before those week-end prison documentaries came on that they always show on MSNBC. I could cry. The only time she could have picked that would have been worse would have been if my electricity had gone out for the night entirely.
OK…messed up that bolding too. I should just give up with this HTML stuff. Second paragraph was not supposed to be bolded.

No one in Western NY that lives here full time call its upstate that I know of. Your daughter’s college is very familiar as it is not far from us. We do get a lot of lake effect snow, but not as much as towns west of us or Syracuse. Now THAT is some lake effect snow there. Last winter was not bad for snow, just bitter cold. Our first year here, however, we had a HUGE amount of snow. Because I had just moved from living in South Florida for 15.5 years without seasons, it was a huge amount of fun. I like the snow much more than the bitter, bitter cold!

I am a member of your site.
Here is the You Tube news video of her announcing her pregnancy. It was on March 6, 2008 and the baby was due in May – he did come early. So it made National news but her children did not her about it? Give me a break!
Then, on March 6th, 2008, the matter of the curious words, “impossibility” was explained. Many media outlets carried the news, including the Anchorage Daily News and ABC Alaska News which carried the second half of this video:
“Gov. Sarah Palin dropped a day-ending bombshell. She’s pregnant. Palin said Wednesday that she and her husband Todd are expecting their fifth child sometime in mid-May.”
When asked about how this new child would affect her, the Governor said, “This is one of those circumstances that has kinda shifted our way of thinking. It certainly makes me very much more so committed to even wanting to stay in Alaska, you know wanting to raise kids in Alaska and at some point in the future I don’t know how far off in the future but in some point maybe there will be other doors open.”
I will post the link separately so it will go through.

I also remember being 2 yrs old watching the moon when the first moon landing happened. (personally I think its odd that we habent gone back in years!)
I heard a bit on the news that they are starting to look for a good spot for another moon landing. I think they should land at the same spot as last time and plant a new american flag right next to the other one. That was a good spot then, should be a piece of cake now!

I went over and checked out Semino’s article referenced above. It’s actually very lucid, well-written and I agree with the majority of his assertions. The ensuing comments, however, are inexplicable.

Preesi,
Yeah – abstinence is a totally brilliant plan – and highly successful.
Today I heard of 2 current issues Palin is dealing with —
1. An ethics investigation.
2. Recent upsetting comments about Trigg.
These were mentioned in the MSNBC website’s clip talking about her press conference.

Steph,
This is in effect all the time, correct? It has nothing to do with the stimulus, does it? Also, I wanted to put out there (you guys are smart and may know this) that if you get laid off from your job and need to continue your health insurance through COBRA (a HUGE amount of money!!!!) that the federal government has a program whereby you only pay 60% of the cost and your employer pays 40% as opposed to your having to pay the full 100% yourself. If I am understanding this correctly (and I may not be), this means that if your monthly COBRA payment is $500 for single coverage – then you would only pay $300 a month to your employer and federal dollars pays the rest.
We did the COBRA thing- actually you pay 35% of the premium. If you declined the coverage when it was first offered because it was too expensive, you can still sign up under the new plan. But you have to have involuntarily lost your employment, and it has to be within a certain time frame, which I can’t remember the dates right off hand.
Moon wanna see my other puppy?

I don’t think anyone has a clue what Palin plans to do, as this entire announcement was just so bizarre. From what I’ve been reading on the net, people genuinely seem to have no real idea as to why she did this or what her plans are.
On FOX news, they seem to be seeing her as a victim of the media. (I’m seeing lots of Kate correlations here)
And CNN is running mainly MJ stories. I’m very interested in the MJ stories but kinda wish they’d show more of the Palin story.
Judy — my thoughts are with you and your father.
Jordon — when people cannot criticize the content, they look for grammatical errors.
Heidi — what a great experience for your daughter! You sound like a terrific mother.

I loved “21 Jump Street Johnny Depp”
Johnny Depp’s Willie Wonka was creepy and disturbing, not in a good way.
I love Captain Jack. I hate “Sweeny Todd.” I love “Bennie and Joon.”
The only think I don’t like about Johnny Depp (and Leonardo, for that matter) is that they ONLY date supermodels. In the early days Johnny dated Wynonna Ryder but for the past decade or so it’s been one model after another.
Compensate much?

Merette, I have no info at all on “underemployment” and don’t know whether it’s associated with the stimulus bill or not. There really isn’t much info available about it other than it exists. I’ve never heard of anyone applying (DS may apply), what has to happen for someone to qualify, how the benefits are figured, nor how long the benefits last.

Pippa, I hope you get a job soon. I know it must suck. I also took out of my 401k this year and they slammed me BIG TIME on the taxes. I actually stopped filing and filed an extension. I am glad that she isn’t stepping down until the end of the month. My mom is vacationing in Alaska for the next couple of weeks and someone needs to protect her from the Russians (wink, wink).
Haaa, haa! I watched the speech and didn’t understand one word she was saying. She’s very pretty and she she has great hair! She’d make a wonderful Judge on “America’s Top Model” type show or “How to shoot helpless animals from a helicopter” training films. (sorry)

It was my understanding that he has lived with actress Vanessa Paradis for over ten years. They have a daughter together. Their daughter was sick a couple of years ago and I thought they were set to marry last year or something. I don’t know if they did or not.
So he has been dating other models at the same time?
My latest blog entry had nothing to do with “Friday Follies.” In fact, I posted it before I even opened this thread (I was waiting until I had time to read the entire thread, still not done but feeling guilty and ironic about my last entry).

One final Kate analogy I have to make regarding Palin….I don’t understand why she had to drag that poor infant out in front of those crowds during the campaign. I couldn’t even see dragging the younger children out but that poor baby especially. It made me feel so bad seeing one of her daughters carrying the baby out for long periods in front of those huge, screaming crowds so late at night. I would have never dragged my young children or an infant out in front of huge crowds late at night like that.
She said in her announcement she learns so much from Trig. IMO, she should have learned not to drag him around and display him like that. I don’t think it was fair to him.
dee, I totally agree. Trig health was precarious (he has heart problems) and he did not need to be exposed to crowds, noise and confusion. I appreciate that they love the baby but that was a poor decision.
Friends of mine with Down kids adore her though, go figure.
If she’s quitting because people are being mean to her than she certainly isn’t cut out for the White House (not that she would be otherwise). I mean what could she possibly think, that it will be easier??? Plus she is one of the most ambitious people I’ve ever seen (Kate Gosselin, move over, Sarah sold her family out for a bigger payday than you could ever imagine). So I think there is something big behind this resignation that we will soon find out because I can’t believe she’d do this for any other reason. At any rate, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that she’ll now fade into obscurity. FYI, Robin Williams does an absolutely hysterical take on Sarah Palin in this clip (it’s towards the end but the whole thing is worth listenting to):

Is there any way that you could sit down with her and come to a common ground that they need to call to see if you are busy or entertaining others before she just drops in? That is simple common courtesy and social etiquette, though I know with some mother in laws, common courtesy just goes by the way side.
*************************
Sorry…I’ve been gone all evening. This is what I need to work on. I know what I need to say and I want to, but when it comes down to it, I just can’t. I don’t know why, other than I am people-pleaser and scared of being rude, hurting someone’s feelings, making someone mad, etc. I just chicken out. I know I need to stand up for myself and set boundaries now, before it gets worse. Again, something I need to work on.
And, by the way, for someone with as much education as she has (and does she ever let you know about it), she is absolutely clueless when it comes to social etiquette! And unfortunately, she is not teaching the sis-in-law those social graces either.
Friends of mine with Down kids adore her though, go figure.
They showed her younger daughter holding Trig today during her announcement and the baby is just adorable. He’s at that chubby stage between baby and toddler.
And not to belabor the Kate analogy thing again but it annoys me when I feel that I’m being taken advantage of by the “cute baby” factor. I love children and I love babies. I think Palin’s children are all beautiful and I appreciate that she’s a mother of 5 wonderful children….but began to feel uncomfortable that she put her children on display so much. And to a degree that I felt was not in the best interest of the children and especially the baby.
Yet I felt that to criticize that would somehow make it look like I was against her children or against her as a mother. The Kate fans make me feel the same way.
I don’t know how to explain it accurately…but I feel it’s disingenuous to hide behind their children so that any criticism of them is one against their children or against motherhood in general…..if that makes any sense. Not a great explanation, I know.
OT…I finally read this article the sassayassy person mentioned. Some of the comments are VERY entertaining!
“No, I am a therapist who does analysis. pervert. do not call the body parts you keep in your deep freezer the “forensics unit.”
You are the so-called therapist who brags about abusing children and taping it to sell to your fellow pornographers.
You must be otherwise why would you raise such nasty topics.”
I can’t get the visual of a freezer marked “forensics unit” out of my head….ok…I’ll go to bed now.
dee3: It makes perfect sense.
My first election was the JFK one ( I couldn’t vote yet but followed it religiously) I have never seen so many family members! And we all felt like we need to be able to tell the Shriver kids form the RFK kids from the Bouviers. Mad House!
Thank you, Gerry Day.
And I totally agree….would have loved to see Rachel and Keith’s take on this announcement. I am beyond frustrated. I’m having to console myself reading the comments over on the Politico site.
BTW, on this Brad’s blog, they’re hinting that a huge scandal is about to break involving the feds investigating something to do with govt. contracts involved in a stadium built and also the home the Palin’s built. So far, just a rumor.
I’m a politics junkie. I’m going nuts with no MSNBC coverage tonight.

Thank you too, Moon.
Ahh, the JFK election. I was just a kid but I still remember the song….”once there was a silly old ant, thought he could move a rubber tree plant, everyone knows an ant…can’t…move a rubber tree plant…but he had HIGH hopes, he had…HIGH hopes…”
I don’t know if I even have the words right but can still sing that song. I must have been in grade school.
Do you remember that song, Denny?
Frank Sinatra “High Hopes”. It was from the movie “A Hole in the Head”
Pretty gruesome, looking back…..
the movie “A Hole in the Head”…pretty gruesome, looking back
Hahaha!
I’ll tell you what I really remember….the JFK funeral. Our entire house went into mourning…..curtains all drawn. I don’t think my mother got off the couch for a week. The funeral cortege, the horses, little John-John holding his mother’s hand….my mother crying. Little kid that I was….I was really worried that the sun would never shine again.
I just saw Johnny Depp in the new Dillinger movie. As always Johnny does not disappoint. Goodness he is a dedicated actor – it must take a lot to emerse (sp) himself into these roles.
Kat, man, I feel bad for you. I knew that MIL situation was going to be unbearable. She’s one of those people who will try and take up every free minute of your time. I have those people and you have to put your foot down or be miserable and mad all the time. It’s not worth it. Sometimes you have to put things plain and go off on those people..you risk having them say you act like a lunatic, but, no one who knows them will believe them anyway, because they are just as annoying and two faced to everyone else in life. Stand up for yourself and stand your ground. Geez, the crazy moved in on top of you. Really, can you live that way forever? Bringing her leftovers to your house for the kids? WTF? That’s obnoxious.
I am not political, but I agree, there’s likely way more to the Palin story– who knows–politics are politics–I don’t really trust anyone in the political arena!
Having my family over for a BBQ today–my dad is an old school Republican, my sis-in-law a liberal Democrat (from Mass.–imagine that! lol)– I love them both, but I DON’T WANNA HEAR ANY ‘DEBATES’ today. I had a rough week with my soon-to-be-19 year old who thinks she knows everything–and I just want to relax and enjoy the day. Here’s hoping!
As to “House-Gate,” here is the article in the NY Village Voice first exposing it
http://www.villagevoice.com/content/printVersion/673217
And here is the reporter who wrote that article explaining it on Olberman’s Countdown
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jAid_HTGnI
All and all I like Johnny Depp. Not all his movies were great over the years but some of the were really really good. My family liked his Pirates movies and sometimes we cannot agree on movies.
Escrow..yes I made the Penis cookies. My camera would not work by the time I had to take them. But next week another friend is having one of those parties. So I will be making them again and I will send a pic to Moon. I am not going this time. One dildo party a month is enough for me! ROFL
I generally do not discuss politics. My Dh and I can get into some heated talks about politics. It gets to the point that I am not in the mood anymore and he is still fired up to argue. That is why I am glad our 20 yr old is so into it now. I can push her over to him to finish for me.
LOL
Im sorry but I fell asleep last night.
Denny? Both the stories you posted contradict one and other. Which is it? did she tell them right before giving birth? Or when she announced it to the State.
She had already told her family before she announced it on the air. But they certainly knew before the birth.
She did keep the Down syndrome diagnosis a secret. One of the girls mentioned he looked a little different.
I apologize for my repeated Palin/Kate analogies but this similarities in whining and crying foul in front of the cameras keeps bringing me back to one of my…well, pet peeves would be an understatement…but that so many seem to disregard the “emperor with no clothes” syndrome.
Here is a woman who, with no reasonable grasp of world politics and history, without even the ability to string words coherently…becomes not only a governor but a VP candidate.
And here is another woman, with no mothering skills, no speaking skills and without even a likeable personality…who becomes the star of a TV show, a popular speaker on motherhood, an author, and begins to build her own brand and her own empire.
I mean, on this blog alone, there seems to be numerous women who far surpass either of these two when it comes to intelligence, perception….you name it.
With the countless thousands of brilliant minds, people of integrity, of acute perception, etc. out there…the Republican party is flailing, at this point, to come up with even one reasonable contender for the next election.
I don’t get it. What is wrong with this planet…..that seems to reward those who least deserve it? Why does this happen? It’s beyond a pet peeve for me….it’s actually downright scary.
So I think there is something big behind this resignation that we will soon find out because I can’t believe she’d do this for any other reason. At any rate, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that she’ll now fade into obscurity. FYI, Robin Williams does an absolutely hysterical take on Sarah Palin in this clip

I wonder if it has to do w/housegate.
http://palingates.blogspot.com/2009/02/housegate.html
Kat, would it be more appropriate for your husband to speak w/your MIL? If not, then I agree w/Pat, you’re going to have to step up to the plate, or be miserable all the time. My sis always tells me when I’m complaining to her for 3 mos. about the same situation/topic/concern, (she is my go-to person, always) “when you get sick and tired of being sick and tired, you’ll do something about it”. Keep telling yourself, no one can take advantage of you unless you allow them to. Repeat it over and over, til it becomes your new mantra!
Good luck!
I’m a big Johnny Depp fan, especially his quirky movies, like Edward Scissorhands, Benny & June, Gilbert Grape, and Ed Wood. He’s not just a pretty face, he’s really talented but also independent, does what he wants, not necessarily what may be most marketable.
As for Palin’s announcement, I was watching the CNN commentators last night and Ed Rawlins, who’s a long-time Republican strategist, said she’s committed political suicide with this announcement, while David Gergen, another long-time Republican, said it was hard to make sense of the reasoning behind the decision because she was all over the place in her statements. Both believe there has to be more to it than what was said, so the rumors about a huge scandal about to break seem plausible.
And, #187dee3, I agree with your entire post!
We went to the Maine coast a few years back and I remember the tourist-like town started with an O, Oldanquat?, but it was so much fun. My husband and I had no idea it was a fire island-like “gay” city. I mean we noticed some guys together, but didn’t really think much of it as we live outside of DC and have seen gay couples before for sure.
They had the best blueberry everything along the coast and we literally drove along, stopping at small restaurants that looked as if the locals were there. It was beautiful. The one thing I remember that was unusual for this southern girl (not so much for my NYC husband) was the matter of fact way the people spoke. There was no flannel. The wait staff didn’t ask “How are you?” or anything like they do in the south. They were all business. I kinda liked it once I got used to it.
Me? I’d relocate to Maine in a heartbeat. We have a son who lives in New Hampshire and, like rhoda morgenstern, maybe I’ll keep better if I go on up north.
I haven’t had a chance to listen to or read much about this whole Palin story, but I agree that there must be something big underneath it all for her to resign so long before the 2012 election. Don’t even get me started on this woman. I find it interesting that within my circle of family and friends, ranging from “damn tree-hugging liberals” (of which I belong) to staunch Repulicans, not one thought Palin had a fraction of what it takes to be VP or run the country. In fact, a lot of people I know who were McCain supporters threw their hands in the air and had a “what was he thinking??” reaction once we learned more about her. I think her nomination for VP was a huge slap in the face to numerous intelligent women on both ends of the political spectrum with much more knowledge, experience, insight, etc. She isn’t even remotely in the same league as Hillary Clinton, Condoleezza Rice, Madeleine Albright, to name just a few. Ok, my blood is starting to boil, so enough about her. I do agree with your #187, dee!
Pat, thanks. Maybe you can be my life coach and teach me how to stand up to people!
Actually, she seems to be the only one I have this trouble with, probably because she is my husband’s mother and I hate to cause waves. I AM going to figure out a way to gain some inner strength and courage and talk to her about all this as diplomatically as possible. And, yeah, that whole leftovers thing was obviously a pathetic excuse just to invade my gathering.
Linda,
You are absolutely right. With my husband, it is complicated. He has expressed that he doesn’t want to hang out with them every weekend, but I think right now he feels obligated to spend time with them since they just moved to a new state. Also, my father-in-law passed away 2.5 years ago, so he feels like he needs to take care of them, help them get settled in their house and such. Like right now, he is over there moving a new bed frame to the upstairs guest room for her. I understand that, I really do. It’s her being inconsiderate of our plans and our family time and butting her way into our plans, just ASSUMING we want her here. She really sees herself as the life of the party and probably genuinely thinks all of our friends just LOVE her. And that is definitely not the case! She is also a master manipulator when it comes to my husband. It was just the two of them after his dad died when he was 10 until she remarried when he was 16. He bascially raised himself and took care of her during those years. He has intentions of standing up to her, but half the time backs down. She’s good. She’s very passive…not an “in your face” bitch at all. Everything is done and said with a smile on her face. So, yeah, I am probably going to be the one to have to handle it. I really wish it weren’t so hard for me to do it. I’m not sure what I am afraid of, but each time I go to say something, I get really anxious and have a hard time coming right out and saying what I want and need to say.
Ok, I am sure you all have had your fill of my drama and wimpiness! Have a wonderful 4th! I’m going to get our swim stuff ready so that when the kids wake up, we can go to the pool. And hopefully that corn kernel my 20 month old put up her nose at lunch will come out so that I don’t have to call the doctor! Fingers crossed!!
Just wanted to update everyone. My dad came home from the hospital last night. They still can’t rule out a mini stroke with 100% certainty but they think it was most likely vertigo. (I am not convinced it’s vertigo. My dad has some stenosis in his carotid artery as well as a bad valve in his heart and an artery in his heart that is narrowed as well. He has been more fatigued than usual lately too. It just doesn’t add up for us. He will see his cardiologist this week to follow up so we’ll see.
I’ll keep you posted…
I am so thankful to all of you for the support

You almost had it: Ogunquit. Next time you visit, go further north along the coast to Down East Maine (which is actually the northern coast) to Machias, the blueberry capital of Maine. Here’s a taste for those who dream of Maine:
Wild Blueberry Crumb Pie
1 unbaked pie crust, 10″
1 Tbsp flour mixed with 1 Tbsp sugar
Blueberry Filling:
7 cups blueberries: wild are best, they are much smaller, may be able to find them frozen in supermarket
1/3 cup light brown sugar, firmly packed
2 Tbsp flour
1 tsp cinnamon
Crumb Topping:
1 cup chopped pecans 1 Tbsp cinnamon
1/2 cup flour Pinch of salt
1/3 cup packed brown sugar 4 oz unsalted butter, room temp
1/3 cup sugar
Preheat oven to 400 degrees
For Filling: Sprinkle the mixed tbsp of flour and sugar over unbaked pie crust. Mix together the filling ingredients and spoon into prepared pie crust.
For Topping: Combine pecans, flour , sugar, cinnamon and salt in a medium bowl and mix together. Blend in butter until mixture is crumbly. Crumble over blueberry filling.
Bake 15 min. at 400 degrees; reduce heat to 325 degrees and bake 30 minutes more until topping is golden brown.
Enjoy! We’ll be eating this on the 5th; rain washed away 4th picnic and fireworks but sun is forecasted for Sunday. Fingers crossed.

So happy to hear that he is home and prayers sent for more solid information going forward and, of course, good health!~
Judy,
I’m so glad your dad is home! Phew!
I missed your first post yesterday, because I quickly scanned the thread for mention of Palin’s resignation. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
Judy [ hugs ] and prayers!!
Judy~
So glad to hear your dad is back home. Continued prayers for you and your family.

OMG, why didn’t I think of you Lifeisgood… I have a pt. of blueberries in the frig., and I don’t want to turn on the oven (too hot) what else can I do w/them? I’d love to make blueberry muffings, but that oven thing…plus I’m lazy and don’t feel like baking. Anything quick and simple I can make w/them? I have to admit, I’ve never done much of anything w/blueberries, other than pancakes and muffins, I seem to gravitate to strawberries!
Judy, let us know what your dad finds out at the cardiologist. I’m happy he’s home.
PS – How do I print Lifeisgood….blueberry pie recipe w/out printing every thing! I tried it w/PFP’s recipes (I highlighted recipe and rt. clicked and hit print), and all of Musings started printing.

Blueberry milkshakes? I made some awesome strawberry shakes the other night, delish.
Maybe C&P and place in a word document?
Linda = on the print screen, you click “Selection” when telling it what to print.
Judy,
Glad your dad is home! Please keep us posted as to the outcome of his cardiologist appointment!

The above is a good starting point for telling her how you feel, maybe “sweeten” it up a bit for her, LOL. Is she a somewhat young woman? I’m guessing maybe she hasn’t made any or few friends there, since she’s new. Got any folks you can introduce her to in her age range? You know, get her invoved w/others, so she won’t be bugging you all the time! Listen, I am the most
non-confrontational person alive, which is my biggest “weakness” I think. But, if I get mad enough, I can usually speak up. So, draw on that anger, but keep it under control and do what has to be done!
Moon, thanks, that worked! Does anyone (PFP??) remember which recap PFoP posted her 2 recipes, one for pumpkin bread (?) and the other was a spinach dish I believe?
Moon,
I’ve been meaning to ask you, have you started getting veggies (or fruit) out of your garden? What all did you plant?
The kid comes home tomorrow. She wants to go into Providence afterward and have lunch at a Vegan pizza place. She is paying! Then we will hit Trader Joes before we go home.
I spent an hour at the ER this morning. I have an exterior ear infection that became very painful. I have a high tolerance for pain so they think I have had it for more then a week but did not feel it until Thursday. They gave me a script for vicodin. I think they decided I needed it because I screamed when they put the ear thingy in to look. I hate narcotic pain relief. I will take them until I feel better.
#201 Linda~
Blueberries are so good for you too. My pie is in the oven as I type; son1 wants it tonight, son2 wants it for breakfast but mean old mom says it’s for our get together Sunday afternoon. Here are some non-oven recipes:
Wild Blueberry Trifle
1 14oz can sweetened condensed milk
1 1/2 cups cold water
2 tsp grated lemon rind
2 cups whipping cream, whipped
4 cups cubed pound cake
4 cups wild blueberries (thawed if frozen)
In a large bowl, combine milk, water, and lemon rind. Mix well. Add pudding mix; beat until well blended. Chill 5 minutes. Fold in whipped cream. spoon 2 cups pudding mixture into 4-quart glass serving bowl
(glass is just for show). Top with 2 cup cake cubes, 2 cups blueberries, then with half of the remaining pudding mixture. Continue layering the remaining cake cubes, blueberries and pudding mixture. Chill 4 hours. Garnish as desired.
Blueberry Chill Pie (Keebler crust recipe) Cheater recipe…you’ll see
1 Keebler butter shortbread ready crust
1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk (lowfat or regular)
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/2 tsp vanilla
4 oz non-dairy whipped topping, thawed
1 can blueberry pie filling…blasphemous
Empty pie filling into strainer and drain excess liquid, reserving some blueberries and liquid for garnish. Combine milk, lemon juice and vanilla. Mix until well blended. Fold in whipped topping and mix well. Mound 1/3 of mixture into crust and gently spread flat. Spoon a layer of blueberries over the mixture. Top with the rest of mixture. Freeze until firm, about 3 hrs. Let stand at room temp 15 minutes before serving. Garnish with reserved blueberries and liquid as desired.
Blueberry Topping
Combine 2 cups blueberries (thawed if necessary), 1/4 cup sugar, 1/4 cup water, 1 tbsp cornstarch and pinch of salt in saucepan. Cook and stir about 4 minutes or until thickened. Stir in 2 tsp lemon juice. Cool to lukewarm and serve over ice cream, cheesecake, pancakes, etc.
Blueberry Smoothie
1 cup plain nonfat yogurt (vanilla yogurt if you want to splurge or ice cream if you want to be extravagant)
1 cup frozen blueberries
1 frozen banana, sliced
1/4 cup orange juice (any kind will do)
Add all ingredients to blender and puree until smooth…refreshing!
Enjoy and cheers!
Linda~
I’ve been meaning to ask you, have you started getting veggies (or fruit) out of your garden? What all did you plant?
Thanks for asking
I love my garden and my efforts. It is only my second year in ground gardening except for one small stint years ago in a Burlington, Vermont community garden and actually we moved before the harvest
This year I have planted potatoes, peas, cukes (two varieties), a lot of radishes (three varieties) all through the garden, lettuce, green bush beans, purple bush beans, pole beans, carrots, corn, tomatoes, pumpkins, zucchini, watermelon, cantaloupe, tomatoes, green bell peppers, strawberries and celery.
I am succession planting radishes, carrots, onions, lettuce and all the variety of beans.
We have, thus far, harvested lettuce and radishes.
We live in a short growing season, so I am paranoid about frost. As a matter of fact we did get a frost the first week of June, but all that was in were potatoes and the strawberries. We covered them and they survived well.
Things doing well: potatoes (are starting the flower now), peas, onion, tomato plants (no fruit yet), all beans are growing and the purple bean plants are flowering. The corn is past knee high and the strawberry plants are very healthy. The water melon is ok. Pumpkins are not sprouted yet. Squash good.
Doing badly: Cukes have beetles. I am bummed and have been picking them off. I finally bought some Neem (organic) and sprayed them. They are still not doing great, but better. The celery is not doing well, and didn’t last year, so celery is off my list to try and grow. The same with the bell peppers. They didn’t do well last year either, even with preping the soil and planting them in a different spot than last year.
TMI, I am sure.
I am so new at it, I spend a good deal of time reading about gardening/micro farming, but there is so much varying info it gets confusing sometimes. I have companion planted both years and will always plant that way. I also will always garden organically.
Once I get up the “scare crow” I am working on up, I will take some pictures
She had to use the outhouse the whole week. Everyone walked bare foot. They did not have a microwave, coffee machine, or toaster. Everything was cooked on the woodstove.
The moment the kid stepped into the house she jumped into the shower. She did not stink but she wanted a hot shower just the same. She got on the computer and sat here for hours. She had to catch up..LOL
Tonite I am going to cook her a vegan lasagna with eggplant and pinoli nuts.
She will tell me all that happened over dinner. I am fighting a bad bad ear infection so I went to bed after we came home yesterday. She understood. She will fill me in today.
Toast on the stove! I have not seen one of those old fashioned toasters since my Dad was alive.
